Let's Talk About the Runick/Mysterune Archetype

Runick Fountain, the most important card of the archetype

Runick is a Yugioh archetype released within the "Tactical Masters" expansion.

It's also know as Mysterune.

It's an archetype that focuses on mill the opponent's deck and represents a sort of return to the past, to a period in which there were still no decks based on a particular archetype but were formed by cards from various sets that had some similar and somewhat complementary effects.

Cards like Needle Worm and Gravekeeper's Servant in 3x each, were the aces of that deck that could lead the opponent to run out of deck cards.

Gravekeeper's Servant

Today we're going to talk about cards that can be used in a Runick decklist, combos and others tips and tricks to help this strategy of milling the opponent's deck.

MONSTERS

Spirit Reaper

"Spirit Reaper" is perfect for this type of deck because it can stall the opponent and if attacks directly it makes the opponent discard one random card from the hand.

Another good monster for this deck is the good old "Lava Golem" for two main reasons:

  • it could be a part of the combo with “Inferno Tempest”;

  • it can wipe out the board of today’s meta deck.

If we are facing a Spright deck and the opponent has Toadally Awesome and Spright Elf, we could sacrifice both monsters and destroy the opponent’s strategy.

Lava Golem

No other monsters are needed. I suggest choosing only three monsters because the Runick Archetype focuses its strategy almost exclusively on quick-play spell cards.

SPELLS

Terraforming searches Runick Fountain

Runick Fountain is essential for the deck and has 2 effects. First of all the Draw Power. In fact, if in this turn we activated a Runick spell card, it allows us to take up to 3 quick-play spell cards from the graveyard, add them to the bottom of the deck and draw the same number of cards that are back in the deck.

Its second effect is perhaps the most dangerous, in fact, it is one of those effects that modify the basic rules of Yugioh's game.

This card allows you to use Runick quick-play magic cards from your hand and during your opponent's turn!

The opponent will thus have to worry not only about the cards you have on the field but also about the cards you have in your hand and this effect has an important psychological impact on the economy of a duel.

Runick Allure

Let's begin on milling the opponent's deck!

Runick Allure activates its effect when a quick-play spell card is activated, and our deck will be full of quick-play spell cards, also this effect activates even in the opponents activates quick-play spell card.

Note that this effect can be activated countless times in the same turn and, if Runick Fountain is on the field, during the opponent's turn.

Runick Tip

And now it's time for the quick-play spell cards that complete the strategy mentioned above.

Activating one of the effects of Runick Tip will make us skip the next battle phase but we can rest assured because if we play this deck, our goal is not to win by attacking and reducing the opponent's life points to 0.

This card allows us to look for another Runick card, such as Runick Allure, and then banish a card from the top of the opponent's deck or, we can summon a Runick monster directly from our extra deck and place it in our extra monster zone.

Runick Flashing Fire

And now it's time for the destructive power of the deck.

Like Runick Tip, if we activate this card we will skip the next battle phase and we can summon a Runick monster from the extra deck.

Runick Flashing Fire is important because lets us get rid of special summoned opponent's monsters that could might bother us and, most important, mill one card from the top of the opponent's deck.

Runick Freezing Curses

And now the negate power of the deck.

Runick Freezing Curses could negate the effect of an opponent's monster and mill 3 cards from the top of the opponent's deck.

Like the others Runick Quick-Play Spell Cards we can special summon a Runick monster from the extra deck and skip the next battle phase.

Runick Destruction

What about spell and trap cards of the opponent's? Don't worry because we have Runick Destruction.

This card let us destroy one spell o trap card the opponent controls and banish the top four, yes FOUR, cards from the top of the opponent's deck.

Runick Slumber

Runick Slumber has the effect to support and protect our monsters, like the ones we have summoned from the extra deck and prevents them from being destroyed. After the activation of this effect, we can banish the top 3 cards of our opponent's deck.

TIP:

If the opponent has a big monster that wants to attack us we can target that monster with this card so it won't attack.

Runick Dispelling

A card that hit the opponent when he add a card to the hand (except during the draw phase).

Runick Dispelling makes us discard one random card from the opponent's hand and banish 2 cards from the top of the opponent's deck.

It has an effect similar to Spirit Reaper.

Runick Smiting Storm

Situational card that can be very powerful. If the opponent controls many cards, Runick Smiting Storm could hit very hard.

Runick Golden Droplet

At first glance the idea of having the opponent draw does not seem very good, but if we have Runick Dispelling ready to be activated we create a potentially devastating situation for the opponent who would find himself discarding a card from his hand and banishing 6 from the top of his deck.

Runick Golden Droplet could be very powerful even if our opponent's deck is running out of cards.

We can say that is a card perfect for the late game.

Scapegoat

Scapegoat could be a good support for the Runick Archetype since the tokens created by its effect could be used for a link summon they can be used to protect us from the opponent’s attacks. It is also a quick-play spell card and activating it would result in the activation of Runick Allure's effect.

Inferno Tempest

One of the most powerful cards ever created, Inferno Tempest's effect could be devastating for the opponent since our Runick deck has almost no monsters.

The 3000 points of damage condition make this card very situational (Lava Golem)but since we rely on only spell card, taking big direct attacks could be more often than usual.

Demise of the Land

The Runick Archetype depends heavily on Runick Fountain field spell card, so having it at our disposal as soon as possible becomes the main objective of the strategy.

Demise of the Land helps us in this purpose as it is a quick-play spell card that activates the effect of Runick Allure and then in the current style of play the special summons of the monsters are continuous and multiple.

Nowadays it is almost impossible to face an opponent who does not make special summons

EXTRA

Geri the Runick Fangs

Geri the Runick Fangs has an effect that let us recycle our beloved Runick quick-play spell cards from the graveyard, also cannot when it is destroyed by battle a card of the opponents could be destroyed as well.

Munin the Runick Wings

The most important effect of Munin the Runick Wings is its power to search our Runick Allure.

It has decent DEF and has targeting protection power. So. if the opponent try to target our Runick Fountain, we can deny it by removing Munin.

Hugin the Runick Wings

Hugin the Runick Wings could search for Runick Fountain, the most important card of our Runick Deck. It has also targeting protection power like Munin, but you will use it primarily to search for Fountain.

WEAKNESSES

Invader of Darkness

Imperial Order

Runick Archetype focuses on quick-play spell cards, so cards like Invader of Darkness and Imperial Order could destroy the entire strategy of the deck.
